NP Learning Professional Role: Levels of Evidence

Are you having a hard time understanding the seven levels of evidence as an NP? If so, it’s understandable—this can be a tricky topic!

This video by Jacklyn DelPrete, EdD, CRNP, FNP-C, is a great way to review it. Jacklyn goes over the seven levels of evidence so you can see what sets them apart from one another.

If you’re getting ready for the NP boards or making medical decisions for your patients, this is information you’ll definitely want to have! Check out the video below:

The Logic of the Seven Levels of Evidence

Jacklyn talks about how, as a rule, the levels of evidence get stronger and stronger as we move from level seven to level one. The reason for this is that the evidence goes from opinion at level seven, to rigorous controlled quantitative reviews at level one. At level one, there is the least amount of personal bias at play, whereas at level seven it can be a major issue.

A Breakdown of the Seven Levels of Evidence

To give you a better sense of how the levels differ, Jacklin reviews them and gives you an example of each.

Here’s a summary:

Level 1: Systematic Reviews

Level 2: Randomized Controlled Trials

Level 3: Nonrandomized (Quasi Experimental) Trials

Level 4: Cohort Studies

Level 5: A Systematic Review of Qualitative Studies

Level 6: A Single Study or Project

Level 7: The Opinions of Experts or Committees

Jacklyn notes that while the lower levels of evidence are considered to be “better” because they are more reliable, valid, and free of bias, it’s important not to dismiss the value of the higher levels of evidence. For example, qualitative studies are certainly worth considering, and evidence gathered from them can yield very important clinical insights.

Nonetheless, the lower levels of evidence are still considered preferable when it comes to making sound decisions for your patients.

Practice Questions!

Jacklyn wraps up with some practice questions to make sure you understand the differences among the levels of evidence. Be sure to check them out—it’s great prep for your NP boards, and can be a great refresher no matter how long you’ve been practicing as an NP.
