The Ultimate Guide to Breastfeeding Basics for NP Board Prep

While breastfeeding isn’t typically a topic you’ll learn about in nursing school, it’s one that may still show up on your NP board exam.

If you’re looking for a quick presentation on breastfeeding to help you prepare for exam day, you’re in luck! This SMNP video,The Ultimate Guide to Breastfeeding Basics for Nurse Practitioner Board Prep covers what you need to know about breastfeeding, so you’ll be able to answer questions about this overlooked subject should you encounter them on the boards and better educate your patients in future practice.

In the video, certified NP Ashton Glover reviews best practices and key facts about breastfeeding you will want to know for your upcoming NP board exam:

Best Practices for Breastfeeding

Both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend that people who decide to breastfeed their infants should feed them breast milk exclusively for the first six months of their lives.

After six months, it’s alright to begin introducing the baby to other foods, however up until the first year of life, breast milk will provide their main source of nutrients.

Breastfeeding FAQs

Ashton will cover a number of other breastfeeding topics that you may come across on the NP board exam, including the benefits of breastfeeding for the breastfeeder and infant, what to look for during the “golden hour” of life, and signs the baby has a good breastfeeding latch.

She also answers a number of frequently asked questions about breastfeeding, including when milk comes in, how often an infant should be breastfed, even how to tell if a baby is getting enough milk.

Other important topics she covers include weight gain in breastfed infants, the nutritional value of breastmilk, vitamin D supplementation, iron supplementation, medication considerations for the breastfeeder and the child, nipple or breast pain, engorgement, even oversupply of milk.
